Success in major examinations is not only about reading hard but preparing the right way. Many students spend long hours studying but still underperform because their preparation does not match the demands of the exam. The WASSCE and the UTME are both important, but they are different in structure, timing, question style and the skills they reward. Understanding these differences is the first step toward better results.
Understanding the Difference Between the WASSCE and UTME
The WASSCE is not written in one fixed format for every subject. Depending on the subject, the paper may include multiple choice(objective) questions, essay/theory questions, and in some subjects, practical work. This means that in your WASSCE preparation, your aim should be to:
understand the concepts well;
know how to explain them and present your answers clearly, and
put in good practice with the exact format required by each subject – using past questions and timing yourself.
For you to perform well in the WASSCE essay format, an important skill you need is sound understanding of what your examiner expects with each question. As you understand your topics better, your ability to interpret questions from those topics improves greatly.
UTME, on the other hand, is a computer-based test made up of multiple-choice questions only. The current JAMB structure gives candidates 180 questions in all (60 questions in Use of English and 40 questions each in three other subjects of the candidate’s choice). The examination lasts 2 hours, and candidates must answer all questions within that time.
How to Prepare for Each Exam the Right Way
Because WASSCE and UTME test students differently, your preparation for each must also be tailored to meet the demands.
For WASSCE, you should focus on:
deep understanding of topics,
clear written expression,
correct use of terms, and
proper answer presentation.
For subjects that involve practicals, you must also practise the practical procedures and not depend on theory alone.
For the UTME, you need good subject knowledge, but you must also build speed, accuracy, and familiarity with the patterns of objective questions - for example, commonly asked topics over the years, styles of testing each topic, and so on. Since the exam is computer-based and time-limited, regular timed practice is essential.
The best preparation for both exams is a strong foundation of knowledge, followed by repeated practice.
Avoiding the Pitfall of Wrong Subject Combinations
One of the costliest mistakes students make in preparing for a future career is choosing the wrong subject combination. This can block admission into a desired course, waste an application, or force a student to rewrite an exam later. JAMB specifically advises candidates to verify their course requirements through the IBASS Eligibility Checker before applying.
Students often make this mistake because they follow friends, assume every course has the same requirements, or wait until late to check.
The right approach is simple. In SS 3, decide on your preferred course early, confirm both the O’level and UTME requirements, and cross-check with trusted sources such as the JAMB IBASS system, school counsellors, or experienced teachers. You should also remember that JAMB registration is done only through approved CBT centres.
