It felt like a bomb had gone off. That's the only way I can describe that cold afternoon when the news reached me. My young mind couldn't process what my ears had just heard.
Kole was dead? What made it worse was how he died. He was a handsome, "full-of-life" young man, and he was cut down by gang members like meat under a butcher's knife. He was murdered in cold blood, but with hot, savage anger. It happened so fast.
But the truth is, Kole wasn't killed by gang members. He was killed by cultism.
I have since learned that cultism starts out as a seemingly "harmless" relationship, a "harmless" yes, but it's full of thorns underneath.
It looks like a safe place for anyone feeling weak or overlooked, but it's really a den of wicked lions hunting for their next prey. It breathes negativity in secret, but spreads wildly like a plague, especially among youths in secondary schools and higher institutions.
How it starts.
This deadly initiation happens subtly through the influence of peers that have a hunger for power beyond what their impact has earned, friends who are seeking respect without authority, and submission without true leadership. It sounds like: "Jenny, I know class is going on, but let me show you something interesting behind the school field." Or: "If you just take this oath, you'll be the most powerful king this school jungle has ever seen."
It starts with keeping the wrong company; friends who initiate innocent minds subtly by luring them with "good things of this life." By their fruits you can identify them - their dressing, boldness in rude speech, disrespect for all authority, and some times, by their violence.
Why it's dangerous
The risks of cultism are not small. They include:

• Loss of focus in your academics
• Expulsion from school
• Arrest or detention

Do not be deceived; evil communications corrupt good manners and can ruin a person's future. Indeed, the relationships a young person goes into are delicate, and can make or mar you. Please look carefully before getting into any relationship, as not all that glitters is gold.
