Now, think of this as the “how-to” section. We’ll show you how to pick the right subjects and study them in a way that helps you later in life. Basically, it’s taking everything you’ve learned about careers and applying it right now, while you’re still in school. So, let's dive in!
The following questions will be answered by this article:
For Junior secondary school students:
“How can I choose the subjects and disciplines that will prepare me for a future career?”
“Should I choose Arts, Science, Commercial or Technical Class?”
For Senior secondary school students:
"I am already in Art class or Commercial class or Science class; how can I know if the subjects and disciplines I am learning now are preparing me for a future career?"
"How can I learn the subjects I'm taking now in senior school in a way that prepares me for my future career?"
First, remember that this series should motivate you to do secondary school with purpose from now on, knowing that there’s a career journey that you are building. It’s very possible to build a good foundation for your future career in secondary school. Keep this in mind as you go through secondary school, friend.
Here's how to align your subjects and skills with possible future career paths you would love to explore:
JUNIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL
Junior secondary school is the concluding part of your basic education*, where every student basically does the same subjects – Maths, English, Basic Science, Fine Arts, CRS/IRK, Social studies, Business studies, Basic Technology, and so on.
This is because basic education is meant to give you a broad foundation across science, math, language, arts and business.
As you interact with these subjects, you may discover that you love subjects in a particular field, like the Arts field for example. This does not mean you should neglect or dislike the subjects from other fields, like Basic Science or Business Studies. You need all of them at this level.
However, your love for Arts-related subjects may be a pointer to the fact that you are likely to do well in art-related career paths. And this should be considered when you eventually have to choose a field to focus on in senior secondary school.
Making the Choice: Crossing into a field in senior secondary school
1. Prayer is important: this will be expanded on in a subsequent article. However, receiving guidance from God is key to achieving purpose. And the Lord Jesus, the good Shepherd, promises to guide His sheep.
2. Guidance from Teachers, Parents and School counsellors is also important.
Ultimately, please ensure that you aren't making the choice merely out of pressure or the desire to conform or another person’s wish.
Make sure the decision is based on deep self-searching and careful consideration, submitted under the guidance of God.
