IN SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL
As a student in senior secondary school, you are already in a particular broad field - either Arts, Commercial, Science, or Technology(if available in your school).
If you carefully read our earlier overview of major career paths(check part 1 and part 2), with the guidance we provided on important points to consider in choosing a career path, you should have enough direction to confidently consider which career path you might choose.
It could be in the formal or informal sector; in the agricultural, manufacturing, sports or entertainment industries, or as a creative writer, storyteller, and so on.
How then can you prepare adequately for a fulfilling career as a senior secondary school student?
1. Be open-minded: Whether you already have a career path in mind or not, be open-minded, as many things can still change. Br open to considering new options you did not consider before, especially as you grow in knowledge.
2. Engage personal research: research can refine your vague idea of a field into a clear understanding, which will influence your ultimate choice of career path.
The Internet can be a great tool in researching about various fields. However, you may need some guidance from mentors on reliable sites to seek information from. Sites that break things down for you to understand are preferable. There are also some books on "Career" that may help.
In personal research, your goal should be: What does this career path ‘A’ entail? What does it contribute to society? What are the “soft skills” and personality traits that are needed to succeed in this career? What's the required subject combination for admission into a tertiary institution to study the course?
3. Approach to external exams: Your performance in the terminal exams, namely, the WASSCE and the UTME, as well as the post-UTME, will determine whether you will be able to study your desired course and ultimately be qualified to practice in the professional career of your choice. So it's important that you spend your time in secondary school with those final exams in mind.
Do not wait till SSS 3 before you lay a solid foundation in all the important subjects for your career. Start learning them well from now; that's how to build a solid foundation for a smooth entry into tertiary institutions and a great career.

The Importance of Mentorship in Your Career Choice and Preparation
Discovering who you are is a big task, and the good news is that you don't have to figure it all out on your own. This is where guidance and mentorship come in.
A mentor—whether it’s a trusted teacher, an older sibling, a school counselor, or a professional in a field you admire—can see blind spots you might miss. They can share their own experiences, help you test your strengths, and give you practical advice on which subjects to focus on. Never be afraid to ask for help or share your career dreams with an older person you can confide in.
Finally, never underestimate the power of prayer and spiritual guidance. Seeking divine direction can give you peace and clarity when you are confused about which path to take. Praying about your future helps align your personal ambitions with a greater, meaningful purpose - God's intention for you.
As we wrap up this aspect, remember that your journey is uniquely yours. Take the time to understand your strengths, explore your interests, and seek the right guidance.
