I want you to picture something. You're thirsty, like, really craving a cold drink. You walk into a store, and the attendant asks what you want. "Fanta, please," you say.
And instead of handing you a bottle, they just... open it and spray it all over you. Your clothes. Your face. Everywhere.
You'd be upset, right? Angry, even. Because that's not what you asked for. You wanted the drink, the actual experience of enjoying it. And the only way to enjoy a drink properly is when it's in its container.
That's actually one of the most beautiful pictures of how God designed sex.
Sex is good. God made it, and when explored at the right time, it fulfills His good pleasure. He's the one who wired your body to feel things, to be curious, to notice people, to feel that little spark. None of that is something to be ashamed of. It's not dirty, it's not a mistake. It's proof that God built you with the capacity to desire something good.
But here's where it gets messy: the devil doesn't create anything. He can't. All he knows how to do is pervert; take something good and rip it out of the container God made for it. And when that happens, instead of a good experience, you're left sticky, stained, and confused about why something that was supposed to feel good left you feeling so empty. That's how it is with sexual desire that's satisfied without considering that God's purpose is for it be satisfied only in marriage.
So this isn't a conversation about shame. This is your big sister or big brother pulling up a chair and saying: those feelings of attraction are not your enemy. Timing and container are the whole issue.
Even Good Things Go Bad Out Of Season
Think about it this way, rain is a good thing. Crops need it, the earth needs it. But if it rains during harvest season, right when the crops are supposed to be dry and ready, it rots everything. Same rain, wrong time, total disaster.
Or think about fire. Fire in a fireplace keeps a whole house warm. That same fire, loose in the living room, burns the house down. It's not that fire is evil, it's that it was never meant to exist outside its boundary.
Your body, your feelings, your desires, they're the same. Good, when they exist inside God's plan. Destructive, when they're pulled outside of it.
And it's not always what you think; sexual immorality isn't only about "going all the way." It's any moment where you and someone else are finding pleasure in each other's bodies outside of the space God created for that; physically or even just through conversation. Those late-night chats that get a little too personal, a little too flirty, whether it's with someone at school or someone you've never met on TikTok or Instagram, that counts too. It doesn't always look like a big dramatic decision. Sometimes it's just a slow drift, one conversation at a time.
Something To Hold On To
Don't hate the thirst, don't demonize the craving. It's there because God put it there. Your job right now isn't to kill the desire, it's to protect it. Keep it in the container. Let it grow into what it was actually meant to be, at the actual time it was meant to arrive.
This isn't the whole conversation, by the way. We're just getting started. In the next articles, we'll get practical; how to actually break free if you're already caught in something, how to guard your heart without becoming paranoid, how to have these conversations with your parents and reliable older siblings or mentors.
For now, just know this: sex and romance is God’s idea, and it's worth waiting for the right container. And the only right container is marriage.
