A solid foundation is not just found laid; it is intentionally laid and made. Anything described as solid must possess a great level of strength to withstand any opposition, so a solid foundation must be built deliberately and carefully.

Perhaps, you are asking: ‘What must I do to start preparing for a great future?’ Look no further; here are some practical steps to building a solid foundation for one’s future.

1. MAKE A DEFINITE DECISION IN YOUR HEART: Decide today who you will build for (self, or God and humanity), and who you will build with.

Ask yourself; what will be the ultimate ambition of my life? To amass fame and wealth for myself? Or to please God and be a blessing to others? Answer this question, and allow it shape your life and choices onwards. We counsel you to choose life. Seek first God’s reign, and His righteousness, and all that you need will be added to you.

2. CLEARLY DEFINE YOUR VALUES.

Ask yourself, "Do I have values?" "What are my values?"

Values are moral principles and standards that guide human actions. There are some principles you ought to hold dear and never compromise on. Stay true to your values and let people know you by what you believe. If your value is integrity in everything you do—even in your exams—stay true to it! You are building a solid foundation for your future when you do so. If your value is sexual purity, stay true to it; don’t allow anyone to contaminate your belief (1 Thess. 5:21). These are some good values to imbibe.

3. SEEK TO UNDERSTAND YOURSELF.

There is also the need to know yourself if you are going to build a solid foundation for your future.

Who are you? Who do you think you are? It’s what you believe about yourself that you will manifest. One mistake you must avoid is viewing yourself through the lens of people’s opinions. The best way to know yourself is by looking unto God. When you look and strive to know God more, you will know yourself as you get to know God (Prov 23:7a). The good news is, God wants us to know Him, through Jesus Christ His Son. To understand this more, read this.

4. SET CLEAR GOALS.

Setting goals gives you a sense of vision and makes it clear what you need to build towards achieving them. Have you ever seen an architect supervise a building project without a house plan? Absolutely not! For the project of your life, set goals. If your desire is to be the top student, then you must have it as a goal, and create a plan and a strategy that will help you fulfill it (Habakkuk 2:2).

There are three other important practical steps we recommend; read about them in this final article!
