Hello, dear UTME aspirant. My name is Caleb Owolabi, and I wrote the UTME in 2021. It was my second successful attempt, and I scored 337, had 99% in Physics, and gained admission into my course of choice in the University of Ibadan. And I'm optimistic that with God's help, you can too! Walk with me as I share 5 things I did that many UTME candidates possibly miss out on in the final days leading up to their exam.
1. I thoroughly brushed through the UTME hot topics
I ensured that I mastered the topics where a lot of questions come from in UTME. For instance I know that at least 10 questions will come from Organic Chemistry in Chemistry, then at least another heavy chunk is going to come from calculations in Stoichiometry, Gas Laws, pH and Solubility. In Use of English, I know that at least 10 questions will come from the literature text so I revised it. For us, it was 'Sweet Sixteen,' for you, it is 'The Lekki Headmaster.' Also, I know that a lot of questions in Optics, Heat and Sound Waves will definitely come out in Physics, so I made sure I was grounded in them, also. The same for Biology.
I ensured that I wasn't lagging behind in any one of these 'sure to come out' topics. So, if you still have few days to the exam, this can be one of the things to focus on.
For topics in Arts and Commercial Departments, if you check through your past questions, you will notice that there are some topics that are more of high priority to JAMB than others (Like Calculus and Trigonometry in Math; Demand & Supply and Market Structures in Economics, Political Ideologies and the Forms & Arms of Government in Government, etc). Focus more on those ones and ensure you master them in this last couple of days.
2. I practiced a lot of past questions.
This gave me a lot of exposure, showed me my weak points and helped me to understand the UTME pattern even more. I solved a whole lot of past questions in the last days and more than showing my weakness, it helped me to revise effectively and improved my speed and accuracy.
3. I revised topics I noticed I had not fully grasped.
How did I know those topics? During practice, I still got questions wrong in those topics. This, I didn't assume I had mastered any topic, but kept testing myself.
I also had serious brainstorming sessions with friends of like minds that are also aiming for a very high score. When doing the past questions, I took out time to really do the corrections and check the topic where I was still missing questions. I went back to those topics to work on them again and also ask questions on them. Brainstorming with a small group of very serious friends was also very helpful at that stage of my preparation.
4. I revised all my Physics formulas. I think this for me was one of the secrets to my having 99% in UTME Physics. A day before the exam, I ensured I went through and master all formulas in Physics and what they stand for. In the examination, even for a few topics that I've forgotten, I just could piece up the parameters and use the formula that connected them. And, it worked because I did not miss any question in UTME Physics, by God's Grace. Now, you may be wondering how to get the topics, textbooks like New School Physics or All Inclusive have a list of the formulas needed for each topic in each chapter. For New School, it's usually listed again in the Summary Section of each chapter. For All Inclusive, it's usually before each chapter. This, I believe will be very helpful
5. I Stayed Mentally and Spiritually Grounded. I prayed, I declared, and I believed that God will help me. I kept reminding myself that in the exam, God is for me, God is with me, God is in me and indeed, in the exam, God showed up.
