X, an SSS 2 student of a private secondary school, constantly cheats to help others in exams, skips classes, distracts and bullies others verbally with her friends, and disrespects teachers who try to correct her by calling them names in their absence.
She is actually intelligent and talented, but was influenced to engage in examination malpractice and skipping classes in JSS 2 by other classmates, and hasn't been able to stop since.
All the habits miss. X is engaged in are harmful, not helpful, to her, to her future, and to others around her. Many of those activities are also a "group" thing, meaning she is not alone in doing them.
This new year, we kick off with an interesting series on Common Vices Among Secondary School Students.
What are Vices?
Vices are wrong practices and habits that go against good morals and can harm an individual or society.
‘Vices’ can be regarded as the opposite of ‘virtue’ – a person with virtues shines brightly and is great to be around, but a bully, for example, hurts others and is of no help to himself or society.
Some common vices you may have come across as a secondary school student, are: examination malpractice, social media addiction, truancy, drug abuse, sexual immorality, laziness, bullying, and cultism. They seem and feel and look and taste cool. But, like sugar-coated poison, they are NOT GOOD for you. They are not in God’s plan for you.
One important thing about vices is that, one can easily be lured into it through the influence of bad company. “Evil communications,” God said, “corrupt good manners.” Many secondary school students that are engaged in vices today were once innocent young boys and girls who were introduced into it.
On the flip side, one of the important steps to breaking free of vices is separation from evil company.
One of our goals for this series is to sensitize vulnerable children so that they do not fall into traps of vices through peer influence or social media influence.
We also aim to show clearly that for some who are already engaged in one vice or the other, it is possible to break free. It is possible to honour God and live separate from vices that displease Him.
We see a great need for students all over Nigeria to have a clean break from dishonourable habits and to become people of virtue, if our country will be built into a great nation.
