Welcome back, dear student. We trust that this series on Vices has been very engaging and relatable!
Let’s kick off with a quick riddle: What do a bodybuilder, a successful footballer, and a world-renowned athlete have in common?
If you guessed discipline, you’re absolutely right!
Discipline is the secret sauce that fuels success in any area of life. Simply put, it’s the ability to control your actions, emotions and thoughts and channel them towards long-term goals rather than short term pleasures—even when Netflix is calling or the bed feels too comfy. From the above riddle, you must have guessed that your favourite footballer or movie star or boxing heavyweight needed discipline to rise to enviable heights. You do, too! If Osimhen and other super eagles needed discipline to hone their natural talents and play football at the peak, you need it in every area.
Here’s the deal: discipline isn’t just for the “cool kids” or naturally talented folks. It’s a skill anyone can build. And trust me, it’s non-negotiable if you want to achieve success, or reach your goals. Whether it’s in mastering a skill, acing exams, or building a future, showing up always(even when it’s inconvenient) is the key.
So, how can you cultivate discipline?
1. Have a compelling vision.
Know why your classes, assignments, and study sessions matter. Let your “why” drive you! If you have never sat down to think about it, you need to ask that question,"Why is school important, and all the tasks that are demanded of me as a student?"
We at the prime project are pleased to break this good news to you: education and school and all the assignments play a key role in shaping your future! Read more about that in our previous series.
2. Discipline is cool, own it!
Spoiler alert: great people aren’t “weirdos”—they’re just disciplined. Drop the mindset that you'd be uncool if you were disciplined.
3. Hang with the right crowd.
Identify disciplined people and learn from them. Who you vibe with shapes who you become!
Now, let’s talk about truancy—the ugly cousin of lack of discipline. Truancy isn’t just skipping school; it’s also:
- Zoning out in class or phoning it in.
- Not participating in discussions or activities.
- Falling behind on assignments or ignoring deadlines.
- Missing out on group work or collaborative learning.
- Letting distractions (social media, games, etc.) take over.
Every absent moment = value lost.
Opportunities hide in plain sight, and you might miss them if you’re not present. The good news? You can break the cycle! Start small—show up, participate, and stay focused. The more you do it, the more it becomes a habit. And trust me, future you will thank you for it!
Bottom line: “Learn at the right time; play at the right time, and you’ll arrive at the right destination.”
Another brain teaser: What do you have now that you didn’t have before reading this? If you guessed “a new perspective on discipline,” you’re spot on!
We look forward to a more disciplined version of you who shows up in your academics and in all other spheres. And don't forget, it's a progressive journey; keep growing!
